Did you know how you describe your show has a lot to do with how many listeners come on board? It’s true. Your host page is picked up by search engines and viewed by people searching through our programming guides. So it’s in your best interest to be as descriptive as possible.
Here’s another reason.
I have many duties as Community Manager for BlogTalkRadio, two of which are of special interest to our hosts. The first is to maintain this blog and offer highlights of some of the great segments airing everyday. Another is to perform outreach among the blogosphere and social-networking sites to promote our hosts and their segments. These are the most enjoyable parts of my job as I take an hour or two each morning and go through all of the day’s programming to find the most interesting segments. Which brings me to my problem.
I want to feature some of our lesser-known hosts . But that’s hard to do when I click to view a show description and get vague, if any, details. A couple of cases in point:
On Friday I was going through my morning perusal when I came upon a show promising music. So I clicked to see the description and there it was - “music.” But what kind of music? Are there any guests or is the host spinning discs? Is there a co-host? A little banter action? There’s nothing here encouraging me to come back later to listen. And if there’s nothing encouraging me, there’s nothing encouraging someone who is looking for something to listen to.
Another description was for a comedy show. It read “we be funny.” Oh? Prove it. An amusing descriptive paragraph might entice me into coming back later to listen. Moreover, I don’t know if it’s the hosts who are the comedians, or if this is a show filled with recorded comedy sketches. Why are they so funny? Do I want to take the chance in coming back to listen, or do I want to invest my time in a show where I know I’ll be entertained?
Now, our hosts are certainly under no obligation to write a paragraph or two describing their shows, but the chances of me featuring them here or promoting them among the social networks are better if I know what exactly it is I’m to promote.
Every day BlogTalkRadio’s traffic grows and that benefits all of us. I love my job, I love the segments, and I’d love to help you bring more listeners in. Give me something to go on, and I’ll do everything I can to make this possible.

Good morning, radio fans. It’s a new week, but the last day of the month. We have lots of great programming at BlogTalkRadio to get you through the Mortgage and Rent are Due Tomorrow Blues.

Acclaimed author Salman Rushdie is on SAJA today for a discussion of his latest novel The Enchantress of Florence. Mr. Rushdie will be on for 30 minutes talking and answering questions. ‘Tweens will be interested to learn Disney’s Camp Rock star Meaghan Martin is today’s guest on World Talk Live. Get here early to chat, call in or just listen! The show starts at 4:00 p.m. EST.
Don’t miss Lady Rerun, the daughter of “What’s Happening” star Fred “Rerun” Berry, as she analyzes so-called online relationship tests. Lady R will also be playing her favorite break up and makeup songs during what promises to be a fun and enlightening segment. The show airs tonight at midnight.

We’re finishing up my second week on board at BlogTalkRadio and let me tell you, there is never a dull moment. I wanted to take a moment to talk about the folks behind the scenes at BTR. They are an extremely positive, enthusiastic bunch. Trust me when I say they believe in BTR and believe in the hosts. It’s a pleasure to be in the company of so many people who feel good about what they do.
I would also like to take a minute to thank all the hosts who reached out to introduce themselves and welcome me to BTR. It’s easy to see why this is such a great place to work. I’m going to have fun getting to know you all.
There’s lots going on today. Don’t worry about missing your favorite shows, though, because they’re available on-demand immediately after each broadcast.

Star of stage and screen, Jasmine Guy, will be a guest tonight on DryerBuzz & Company at 8:00 p.m. EST.

This is a week of anniversaries. On Tuesday, the Fruit Salad Show celebrated its one-year radio-versary with BlogTalkRadio. On Wednesday, it was MediaLizzy’s turn. Today, we offer congratulations to Dangerous Lee on finishing up her first year on the air with BTR.

My biggest challenge since starting at BlogTalkRadio is choosing programs to highlight here, but it’s also my biggest pleasure. You see, while I’m looking for suggestions for you, I’m lining up my own listening day. I’ve been working out of my home as a freelance writer and professional blogger for six years now and sometimes it gets a little quiet. Now, with BTR in the background, I feel as if there’s conversation flowing and I’m having coffee with friends. Do you listen while you work? If you find yourself turning on the CD player or television for “background” consider listening to us as well.
