Mary and Rhoda Together Again? ‘I’ll Talk to Mary About It,’ Valerie Harper Tells Us

“I'm not snorting anything because we worried about spilling it on the dress,” Valerie (above, as Talullah) tells us of the coke scene.

We’re not saying it’s a Mary-Rhoda reunion (just yet). But we’re not saying it’s not, either.

Interviewed on Let’s Do Lunch, the actress who immortalized Rhoda Morgenstern on that classic ‘70s sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and its spinoff, Rhoda, says yet another pairing could be in the BFFs’ future.

When host Robin Milling asks, “Will you ever reunite for a Mary Tyler Moore movie?” Valerie Harper—who did re-team with Mary for the 2000 TV flick Mary and Rhoda—replies:

“There’s no movie in the works for me at the moment, but you never know what’s gonna come up.

“Boy, what would we do this time? We’d be grandmothers maybe!” she continues.

“I’ll talk to Mary about it. I’d love to work with her again.”

Valerie also credits Mary for helping her move from second to first banana.

“A real life-changer was I didn’t want to do a spinoff, and [Mary] said, ‘Are you crazy?! Do the spinoff. You don’t want to be my sidekick all your life.’

“I said, ‘Yes! Yes I do!’”

The BFFs back in the day.

The BFFs back in the day.

Meanwhile, Valerie’s keeping busy bringing iconic—yet substance-abusing—actress Talullah Bankhead to life on Broadway in Looped.

And from the sound of things, that was no mean feat.

“The drink is water. They asked me if I wanted to drink iced tea, which doubles for scotch, but I didn’t want it because I have to speak in this low voice,” says Valerie.

“Our director, Rob Ruggiero, is such a stickler for detail and he thought the tea looked too yellow and looked too much like bourbon and it had to look like scotch.

“What I smoke are herb cigarettes but I’m not inhaling. I am taking it in my mouth, lifting my chest and then exhaling. And smokers tell me they can’t tell, so that’s good.

“The brand name is Ecstasy and I think the company was in existence before the term ecstasy came into popular culture.

    Dear Valerie:
I already have three ideas for what you and Mary can do together, and the sooner the better. Betty White has to be in there, too, I would hope.
