SoundBits: Andy Schneider Clucks the System

Any show that regularly features such segments as “Chickens in the News,” Chicken Happenings” and “Chicken Trivia” is OK in our book. Ditto its host, Andy Schneider, who manages to maintain a terrific sense of humor while helping thousands of Americans shell out ever fewer bucks at their local Wegmans, Kroger or Piggly Wiggly. Since launching Backyard Poultry with the Chicken Whisperer three months ago, the Alpharetta, Ga.-based owner of a pet-chicken company called (what else?) Atlanta Pet Chickens has become something of a folk hero here at BlogTalkRadio, where his name rarely fails to elicit affectionate smiles. So without further a-cock-a-doodle-doo, we give you the Chicken Whisperer

Give us a 15-second pitch for your show—why should listeners tune in?

Backyard Poultry is all about keeping backyard poultry and living a self- sustaining lifestyle. We often have themed weeks, like Hatchery Week, Veterinarian Week and Author Week. Our guests are the who’s who of the backyard-poultry and self- sustaining fields. And we often broadcast live on location from all across America!

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

I do eat chickens, despite keeping them for pets. (I just don’t eat my own chickens.) And I met my wife online, though even some of our closest friends still don’t believe it.

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

To be honest, I’m not really sure that I have one. Or at least I can’t think of one right now.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Reese Witherspoon. I’ve been trying to contact her because she keeps backyard poultry. She’s also been nicknamed “The Chicken Lady” by her friends and neighbors, because she always hands out fresh eggs!

As we speak, what are you wearing?

Denim shorts and a button-down dress shirt. (Not my trademark overalls and yellow hat that I wear on tour.)

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

Because my show starts at 12 p.m. EST, I have eaten complete meals while live on the air. That includes the meal, dessert and drink. But I don’t think anyone has ever suspected!
