We like to think of Bettina Restrepo‘s Moose and Magpie – the latest title to win Blurb! Book of the Week honors – as an Abbott and Costello adventure for the kiddie set.
For here’s how the author pitches her 32-page picture book:
“Young Moose is lucky to find a friend and guide in the wisecracking Magpie. ‘What do the Liberty Bell and Moose have in common?’ the Magpie asks as the seasons begin to change. Then, when fall comes: ‘Why did the moose cross the road?”
To find out the punch lines from those and other gags, you’ll have to pick up a copy of Bettina’s rib-tickling tale, with illustrations by Sherry Rogers, which makes great bedtime reading for children four to eight years old.
Now a professional writer whose work has appeared in Highlights for Children, Nature Friend and Boy’s Life magazines, Bettina spent more than 15 years toiling away in the retail industry before breaking into the book game.
Currently working from her Dallas home, which she shares with her hubby, son and pooch, Bettina is busy writing about more animals, while also completing her fourth young-adult novel.
Every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, Blurb! hosts Sally Shields and Dr. Kent review not books themselves but prerecorded pitches from five writers whose literary works are hot off the presses.
And each scribe gets a mere three minutes to convince the hosts that theirs is the book worth cracking. But if they succeed, they capture the coveted Book of the Week title.
That means Sally and Dr. Kent post it prominently on the Blurb! website, just as they did with Bettina’s book.
To top it all off, the winning author gets a guest spot on the show, during which to pitch his or her book live to listeners worldwide, just as Bettina will appear on tonight’s show.
