In a Blurb! first, hosts Sally Shields and Dr. Kent have selected not one but two writers to wear the coveted Book of the Week crown.
But in a twist befitting a literary show, both scribes sport the initials “ML,” so deciding whom to plug first was a bit of a challenge.
In the end, however, we let alphabetical order rule, which means Michael Lane gets top billing.
A novel that “blends memoir with a spicy mix of New Orleans jazz, cuisine and history,” Michael’s The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum tells the story of a “marketing executive who wrestles with the demands of corporate politics, an exhaust- ing travel schedule, and the challenge of balancing work with the needs of a family” (to say nothing of his autistic child).
One night, en route to New Orleans, the hero meets Yawdy Rum, an aging jazz musician who turns out to be a sage.
Prior to taking up writing, Michael, who lives in Excelsior, Minn., with his wife Sharon, was a vice president at one of the largest privately-held companies in the world.
Morgan Lawrence‘s The Streets Ran Red, by contrast, tells no tales. Rather, it’s a collection true stories the author amassed during his 20-year career as a paramedic.
“These are the men and women who, on a daily basis, rescue the public from unforeseen perils,” says Morgan, a U.S. Navy veteran who lives, in Palm Beach County, Fla. “The moment a person is injured, the clock starts ticking.”
Every Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, Sally and Dr. Kent review not books themselves but prerecorded pitches from five writers whose literary works are hot off the presses.
And each scribe gets a mere three minutes to convince the hosts that theirs is the book worth cracking. But if they succeed, they capture the coveted Book of the Week title.
That means Sally and Dr. Kent post it prominently on the Blurb! website – just as they did with Michael and Morgan’s books.
To top it all off, the winning author gets a guest spot on the show, during which to pitch his or her book live to listeners worldwide – just as Michael and Morgan will appear on tonight’s show.
