Cinema Royale talks to filmmaker Derek Cianfrance. Cianfrance directed the controversial relationship drama Blue Valentine and the crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, both starring Ryan Gosling.
Cianfrance discusses his films’ recurrent theme of family dynamics, saying that “families are filled with secrets and intricacies, and so is cinema.” Cianfrance is interested in the disconnect between the outwardly happy way that families present themselves and their internal conflicts, saying that, from a young age, he was interested in taking photographs of people fighting. “I don’t relate to perfection,” he says.
Cianfrance also talks about his work with Gosling, who plays a motorcycle stuntman in The Place and did many of his own stunts. Gosling, Cianfrance says, excelled far beyond his expectations after just eight weeks of motorcycle stunt training.
