Steve Leser talks to Jack Cloonan, the senior case agent in the FBI’s Bin Laden Squad. The squad was assigned to build a prosecutable case against Osama Bin Laden and other high-ranking members of al Qaeda.
Cloonan’s work started in 1996 with an intelligence finding detailing the existence of al Qaeda as a threat to U.S. national security. Cloonan talks about his initial impression of al Qaeda upon learning of its existence, saying that, even though the noted the group as a threat “even in the very early stages,” he didn’t understand the extent of their funding and “organizational expertise.”
