The cast and crew of The Book Thief

The new movie The Book Thief, an adaptation of Markus Zusak’s 2005 novel, is a drama set during the Holocaust. Zusak, director Brian Percival, and stars Geoffrey Rush and Sophie Nelisse stop by Cinema Con Queso to talk about the film.

Rush calls the film “a professional experience on many levels,” and talks about their goal to “avoid sentimentality or melodrama” and to “have a truth and a reality.” He thinks that the central theme of the film is “common humanity among foes,” and talks about the experience of “shooting in Berlin with a large German crew.” Of the relationship between him and Nelisse, he says that they “found a spark very early,” although Nelisse, 13, originally found Rush “scary.”
