It seems safe to say that Lorenzo Thomas was made for radio. One listen to his velvety, effervescent voice and you’ll know what we mean: This cat has got it goin’ on. As host of Live from the M.I.A., Lorenzo has show- cased such A-list guests as Tyler Perry, 50 Cent, Don King, Sade and DL Hughley. Then again, that may be easy compared to his day job – hosting the four-hour weekday show Afternoon Jumpoff on WEDR-FM in Holly- wood, Fla. Guess it’s a good thing we got the New York City native, who now calls Miami his home, at all for this column. That said, let’s get right to the grilling.
Give us a 15-second pitch for your BlogTalkRadio show – why should listeners tune in?
We talk about entertainment, music, current events, lifestyle, sports and politics. But most of all, you get to spend an hour with me – live from the Sunshine State.
Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?
I’ve VJ’d on BET’s Video Vibrations and Planet Groove. I also had small parts in the feature flicks Enemy of the State and Forces of Nature.
Who’s your broadcasting hero?
I would have to say [‘70s New York City DJ] Frankie Crocker, because I grew up listening to him. And Paul Harvey, because his show was the first I had to monitor when I started as an intern.
If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?
President Barack Obama would be my first choice. But I’ve already aired the interview I conducted with him prior to the election. Second would be Muhammad Ali. Though that might be a bit difficult at this point in the champ’s life. So – because they’re such a hot topic – I’d have to say Chris Brown and Rihanna.
As we speak, what are you wearing?
I’m wearing clothes. [Editor's Note: So he says.]
What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?
The strangest thing I’ve ever done on the air is fall asleep, only to be awakened by the police. [Editor's Note: Do tell.]
