‘Night Views Radio’ Host Robert Saul: Depression Never Sounded So Funny

If ever there were a BlogTalkRadio show on which anything goes, Night Views is it. Like what, you ask? Like an interview with Donna Simpson, the 42-year-old mom who spends $750 a week on food and wears (no joke) size XXXXXXXL dresses—during which she said, “I’d like to be fatter.” Or how about Jim Florentine? Soon after dropping in to chat, the funnyman set the record straight on his breakup with Howard Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers. “We’re two adults,” he said. “We’re not in high school going, ‘I’m never talking to you again!’ ‘Well, f— you. I’m not either!'” Better yet, Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett. Among the projects he showed up to plug was the Disney feature Tangled, in which he plays Hook Hand Thug opposite Mandy Moore’s Rapunzel. The only problem was, he described the flick as being about “this hot chick that lives in a castle, but oddly enough it’s her pubic hair that she lets out the window.” So it’s no wonder we’re psyched to have as this week’s SoundBits subject, the puppet-master behind such interviews, Robert Saul. The self-described stay-at-home dad, who makes his home in Mays Landing, N.J., joins us live in three, two…

Whoever you are—young or old, rich or poor, Red State or Blue State, tattooed or regular—you’ll get a kick out of Night Views. We’re never shy about expressing our views on every topic under the sun, while allowing our listeners to do the same. Plus, we really get into it with actors, musicians, comedians and other newsmakers. Being fun first and foremost is key for us.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you.

(1) I used to suffer from severe depression. I was actually in the hospital along with my future mother-in-law, being treated for the condition. That’s how I met my wife; when she came to visit her mother. (2) Before launching Night Views, my co-host, Travis Wettstein (who’s also my cousin) and I had been talking about doing a radio show together as far back as the sixth grade.

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

The King—Howard Stern. I’m a huge Howard fan. He’s the industry’s greatest innovator. He’s the only reason I wanted to do the show. He’s also the reason that most people in talk radio have jobs. Radio would be dead now without all the contributions he has made.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Aside from Howard, I’d love to book Stevie Nicks. I’ve reached out to her management several times but I always get declined. Still, I love Stevie. She’s a beautiful person inside and out, and her music moves me. Interviewing her would be a dream come true. So if anyone out there has any inside connections, please hook a brotha up.

As we speak, what are you wearing?

My Bill Cosby-esque sweater. (Though no pants.)

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

While interviewing Brad Garrett, I was drinking this Sopranos Prosecco out of a tall champagne glass that was bought for my wedding. Brad made me laugh so hard that I knocked it over and spilled the champagne all over my laptop, shorting out all the keys. It cost me 200 bucks to get the thing fixed!
