Marlo Thomas: Phil Donahue ‘Is My Father’ (And on Demi More Divorce Rumors: ‘It’ll Pass’)

Is there a psychiatrist in the house? If so, please weigh in on this doozy from Marlo Thomas, about her hubby of 30 years, Phil Donahue:

“I didn’t realize until after I married him that he is my father,” the still-sexy-at-72 TV icon tells Milling About host Robin Milling.

“He’s like my father in the fact that he’s very charismatic, he’s a great storyteller, he’s very empathetic to people—he really cares people and he has a basic decency,” she adds of Phil’s connection to her even-more-celebrated dad, funnyman Danny Thomas.

“That’s pretty much all you need to be like your dad. Is he a comedian? No. But he is a charismatic man and he’s a magnet to people.

“People really love him and he’s a good guy and my dad was a really good guy,” says Marlo, whose new memoir, Growing Up Laughing: My Story and the Story of Funny, hits the shelves Sept. 28.

OK. Now that that’s cleared up… Marlo goes on to recall how Danny, who passed away in 1991, was super-supportive of her union with daytime talk pioneer Phil—particularly when the media tried to turn her bliss into misery.

“When I was married one year, all these stories were in the tabloids about how Phil and I were getting a divorce and how we’d seen lawyers.

“One had a quote from my father that said, ‘It wouldn’t last a year.’ Literally. I was heartbroken and I cried, and I carried on.

“My father said to me, ‘On the page across from your divorce story is a woman who gave birth to a whale. Now, do you believe the whale story?’

“I said no and he said, ‘Well, neither does anybody else, and nobody is gonna believe this either.’”

Marlo also chats about filming next year’s big-screen comedy Laughing Out Loud, which co-stars Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore—who has recently been barraged by tabloid reports that hubby Ashton Kutcher cheated on her.

“Demi is really a terrific woman and a great mom,” she says. “Her kids were [on the set] and her daughters came to visit. [Ashton] came, but I wasn’t there when he came.

“I’m sorry to say because every woman I’ve met asks me, ‘Did you get to see Ashton?!’ No, I missed him twice because he had taken her daughter Tallulah somewhere.

But her other two daughters, Rumer and Scout, were on the set a lot, and you can just see how much they love their mom and how comfortable they are hanging out. It was nice.

“You know somebody through their kids. You get a very good look at them.”

As for the raging rumors that Demi and Ashton on the brink of a breakup, Marlo says:

“They’ll have to have this garbage about them, but it’ll pass.”
