Some bosses know how to woo talent. And from what Rodney Perry tells us, Mo’Nique is the poster girl for that skill.
Interviewed on The Mutha Knows Show, Rodney—who hosted his own BlogTalkRadio show before being hired by BET last year as co-host of The Mo’Nique Show—recounts how he came to work side-by-side with the funny lady who’d go on to win an Oscar.
“Her assistant was a fan of mine, so her assistant was telling her you got to see this guy—this Rodney Perry is funny, blah, blah—and she came out to see me at The Comedy Store in L.A.,” Rodney tells host Mutha.
“And she sought me out probably two days later. She found my number, called me out of the blue. I get a call from Mo’Nique.
“Now imagine what that’s like. I’ve never talked to Mo’Nique over the phone. So she calls me and is like, ‘Yo, Rodney. This is Mo’Nique,'” he continues.
“And I’m like, ‘Mo’Nique who?’ And she’s like, ‘Mo’Nique nigga’—you know, like she talks.
“And she was like, ‘I know you have a family and kids. Would you mind if I took your wife on a shopping spree?’ And I was like, ‘Uh, no.’
“So she took my wife on a shopping spree maybe two days later and at that time we was on the struggle; living in Inglewood-L.A.—in a three-bedroom apartment and had one car at the time, and for somebody to reach out that way it was really incredible.
“And after that, she spent about $2,500 on our home, groceries-just things people need, necessities. And that just speaks to the human beings she is.”
