SoundBits: ‘Poor Chef’ Charles Mattocks’ Healthy Lifestyle (and Famous Uncle!)

Beautiful dreamer.

Charles: Beautiful dreamer.

If I had to choose a bunch of BlogTalkRadio hosts to sit down with and lift a few pints at the local pub, Charles Mattocks would be on the short list for sure. For one thing, he’s Bob Marley’s nephew! For another, he hosts a show that – as a food blogger – is right up my alley. Oh, and did I mention he has his own spice line and he hosts a syndicated TV show – also called The Poor Chef? Interesting tales for sure.

Since we’re not within drinking distance of each other, we’ll have to find out about Charles, a single dad who hails from Tampa, Fla., through this week’s edition of SoundBits. Thanks, Charles, for taking the time out to “dish” with us.

Give us a 15-second pitch for your BlogTalkRadio show – why should listeners tune in?

The Poor Chef is all about health, life and family. I try to keep the program free of politics and other radical topics that most feel they need to talk about to be entertaining. My family values and love of education allows me to bring out the best in people – not unlike Barack Obama.  I seeks to find answers in such a way that all can feel good about the next step in the lives – from weight-loss to handling depression. I also have celebrities on the show who value giving and are not looking for anything in return.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

I love quiet times at home. I love to relax and watch movies and dim the lights and do, well, just nothing.

And I can be very quiet at times – and I’m a romantic. The persona people see on TV is not who I am most of the time. We have to entertain, but  I find myself just wanting to be a regular person most of the time. When people meet me they say I’m nothing like the guy they see on TV, or hear on the radio. I also dream a lot. I dream of amazing things to do and places to go with the person I love or would like to be in love with.

Livin' large work on his set.

Livin' large on his set.

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

Howard Stern. The guy came from nothing and built an empire. No one believed in him. His style was nothing like what was out there on radio. A lot of people have tried to imitate him and he has lasted the trials of the business and made others around him rich along the way.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Nelson Mandela. I feel he has a lot to to offer the world. He has been through so much and has endured trials of the likes of Ghandi or Martin Luther King. He represents a generation that is passing away.  But this great man should not be forgotten.

As we speak, what are you wearing?

Boxers and a t-shirt.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

Laid on my back in my boxers and t-shirt in the dark.

StandUp For Kids, MissionFish and Holiday Recipes

We love when hosts use BlogTalkRadio to promote good causes. Especially at this holiday season, it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy to provide a platform for the dissemination of information. Today, like most, is such a day.

Rick Kocha, Founder and CEO of StandUp for Kids will join The Recipe Box today at 2:30pm ET to discuss his organization. StandUp for Kids has been recognized by both the Clinton and Bush standupforkidsAdministrations for their work as advocates for America’s homeless youth population. From their website:

The mission of STANDUP FOR KIDS is to help homeless and street kids.

We do this, every day, in cities across America. We carry out our mission through our volunteers who go to the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives.

Our focus goes beyond street outreach and extends to deterrence and resource programs that we provide in schools and via the Internet. But all facets of our mission are guided by the mandate that our volunteers shall tell kids they care about them and then, at every point, prove it.

Visit www.StandUpForKids.org for more information.

As an added bonus, listening to The Recipe Box today could net you a FREE Download of a Christmas Cookbook with over 40 recipes! In addition to the hosts sharing favorite holiday recipes and memories, Danna Crawford, eBay PowerSeller, will be sharing information about the Children in Need Campaign on MissionFish.org, as well as charity auctions on eBay. Big show!

Healthy Holiday Eating – Even for Kids

Is it possible to not overdose your kids (and yourself) on sweets and treats this holiday season? Many people don’t think so, but it can be done. You just need a little know-how.

SmartFoods Motherhood Uncensored will host special guest Kelly Corbet of Smart Foods Healthy Kids tonight at 9pm ET.

Consider these statistics from Corbet’s website:

  • This is the first “modern” generation the Centers for Disease Control predicts will have shorter lifespan than their parents
  • Today in the US, one in fifteen kids under three-years-old has a food allergy
  • Children born after 2000 have ridiculously huge chances of developing diabetes.

Join them tonight to get the skinny on how to eat healthy and still have fun this holiday season.

BlogTalkRadio – Bringing Parents and Kids Together

Across the network BlogTalkRadio hosts lots of shows for families. Like the days of yesteryear, when the family piled around that central piece of furniture called The Radio to listen to the news, comic gems, and children’s stories – BlogTalkRadio brings families together.

Only today these broadcasts are created not just for families, but by families. And they aren’t blasted through the airwaves; they are streamed through your favorite social radio network – BlogTalkRadio.

Take, for instance, the Parents ‘n Kids Talk Radio show. Last week they had a great show about movies for Tweens as well as some early reviews of Seinfeld’s new “Bee Movie.” Their Halloween episode tackled tough issues like, when do you stop trick-r-treating? Join them live every Saturday for the radio show that brings parents and kids together.

Stacey and Joanna at PreSchool Rock Moms always have great content for families. Last week, they discussed how your child can get a live Santa call.

Families Online Radio specializes in parenting advice and family fun. On past shows, Samantha Gianulis from the Family Food Network dropped tons of advice and hints on Thanksgiving cooking delights. Parenting expert Margie Manion talked about how to deal with that picky eater. Their summer show detailed great summer reading beyond, you know, that kid with the scar on his forehead.
