BlogTalkRadio Host Dr. Ed James Featured in The New York Times!

This morning, we were excited to see one of our hosts, Dr. Ed James featured in an article in the New York Times Small Business section.  In the article, columnist Melinda Emerson, A.K.A @SmallBizLady interviews Dr. James about his BlogTalkRadio show, Funerals and Fried Chicken and how it is helping to grow his social media audience and build an online following for his business.

He started the show to help promote Heal2BFree, a company he founded with the mission of “closing the health disparities gaps between people of different socioeconomic, racial and educational backgrounds.”  Through his program, Dr. James is educating not only his audience about healthier eating habits, but also urging institutions such as churches and corporations to provide healthier foods and promote physical activity to their members and employees.

In the article, he shares some valuable tips for those who are interested in getting their feet wet in online radio, including selecting a topic that you feel passionate about, starting a dialogue with guests on your show and learning from established hosts on the network.  He actually began hosting his radio program by connecting with an established host on BlogTalkRadio who helped to show him the ropes.  The piece also mentions BlogTalkRadio University, our educational radio program for hosts.

We are proud of Dr. James’s success and hope you are inspired by his story.  Go Dr. James! You can read the complete article here.

Get More Exposure for Your Show with Apple’s Podcasts App

Last week, Apple came out with their brand new Podcasts app, which makes podcast content in iTunes much easier to discover and access on an iPad or iPhone.  As a host on BlogTalkRadio, you can easily add your show to iTunes and benefit from having your content automatically included in the new Podcasts app and more easily found by users. What’s great about the app too is that your listeners can easily share your show with their networks via Twitter, Messages or Mail.  Learn how to get your show on iTunes by listening to this BlogTalkRadio University segment or following the directions on this previous blog post.

After your show is up on iTunes, be sure to let your listeners know that they can easily subscribe to your episodes when they download the new, free Podcast app.  All they have to do is visit the App Store on their iPhone or iPad and search for “Podcasts.”  Once the app is downloaded, they can type your show into the search box and subscribe:

The app includes hundreds of thousands of podcasts in 40 languages and are grouped by topic (i.e. arts, business, etc.).  Let your listeners know that they can discover other BlogTalkRadio shows in the app by just typing BlogTalkRadio into the search box:

We think the new Podcasts app is great for several reasons.  Before, users would have to log into iTunes from their computer in order to download or subscribe to a podcast, but with this app, there is no need to have to use a PC to access your podcasts.  Now, users can also stream episodes online or download them locally to listen to offline.  And for those who prefer to manage podcasts on their PC, the app allows them to sync with iTunes.  Most importantly, the Podcasts app gives your BlogTalkRadio show more exposure and makes it easier for your audience to listen anytime and anywhere!

How To Create A Sticky Angle For Your Next Radio Show/Podcast

Many new hosts on BlogTalkRadio come to us for advice on how to get great guests, but big name guests are not the only way to grow and develop your show as we learned on a recent BlogTalkRadio University interview with BTR host, Halli Casser-Jayne.  In the beginning, it may be difficult to land a famous guest, but what you can do is put some creativity into figuring out interesting angles to attract listeners and keep them tuning in.  Over time and after your show has built up credibility and an audience, getting those big guests will get easier.  You may even find yourself having to turn some away, as many of our more veteran hosts on the network have to do quite often.

Halli is new to BlogTalkRadio and the host of The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Talk Radio for Fine Minds, which features guests from the world of politics, books, art, culture, and celebrity.  Although her show is new to BlogTalkRadio, Halli is actually a seasoned interviewer in her own right.  She started her career as a radio host on WNYW, served as a foreign correspondent in war-torn Central America and is the celebrated author of A Year In My Pajamas with President Obama.

In a short time on BlogTalkRadio, Halli has grown her audience of listeners very quickly, not only because of the caliber of guests she has on her show, but also because of the thought and creativity she puts into figuring out an angle for each episode.  During our interview, she shared some tips and insight into interviewing and figuring out a sticky angle.  That angle may not include a celebrity guest, but it could be about a topic that is trending or popular or just plain interesting.  For instance, Halli mentioned that one show she did all about ice cream was actually one of her most popular episodes.  In addition, she has hosted shows on topics such as film noir, street performers and more.  Tune in to Halli’s interview to get the lowdown from an expert host.  Listen now.

Teenage BlogTalkRadio Host Making A Name For Himself

We hear so many interesting stories about our hosts in the news, but we were delighted to stumble across this article in the BALedger which profiled Tyler Jones, the 15 year old BlogTalkRadio host of The Dr. Report with Tyler Jones.  Tyler covers sports on his show and has attracted some pretty big name guests. His guest list has included the likes of Bruce Howard, Joel Klatt, Tribble Reese, Kenny Alber and Chris Neville.

Tyler has been passionate about sports since a very young age and he’s used his show on BlogTalkRadio to share that passion with an audience.  We hope Tyler will be an inspiration to other teens his age to start shows on topics they feel passionate it. Who knows? This could lead to a career in sportscasting for Tyler one day and it all started on BlogTalkRadio!

Tune into The Dr. Report with Tyler Jones Monday through Friday at 10 PM CDT here.

The USPTO Thinks BTR is Pretty Cool (and we got a patent to prove it!)

Earlier this month, our parent company Cinchcast was issued a patent from the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for its interactive audio publishing platform that powers BlogTalkRadio.  As a result, hosts on our network are now using a technology that is not available on any other platform but ours.  Here’s what Alan Levy, our CEO had to say about it: “When we created the Cinchcast platform in Fall of 2006, we believed that we had invented a new way to use the phone. In essence, we transformed the phone into a publishing platform.”

We are really excited that the USPTO recognizes how innovative and unique our platform is.  Our technology is the only one of its kind that has allowed for thousands of hosts to share their voice and interact with millions of listeners across the world.  We think the USPTO is right to think that’s pretty cool!  You can read more about our patent here.
