Yet Another Hometown Paper Profiles Our ‘NBA Breakdown’ Hosts—Who Predict 15 Million Listeners

We don’t have any sort of award for best promotional effort of the week. But if we did, Audley Stephenson and Dave Mendonca would be shoe-ins for the honor.

Two days after our NBA Breakdown hosts landed a profile in The Brampton Guardian, they scored another report in the local media, this one in The Mississauga News, which covers the Toronto suburb of (you guessed it) Mississauga.

“Dave Mendonca and Audley Stephenson are just a couple of regular guys who happen to love basketball,’ writes the paper’s Iain Colpitts. “But if you ask them, that’s what makes their Internet radio show, The NBA Breakdown, so appealing.”

The News also quotes Audley on how the show’s success sneaked up on him.

“In the beginning stages, it feels like you’re talking to yourself in a room,” he says. “You’ve got no idea who’s listening, but then you see the numbers go above 100,000 and you realize you’re not in a room by yourself anymore.”

Dave, meanwhile, tells the paper that the power of the Internet has been incredible and he expects to see the show reach 15 million Continue reading

BlogTalkRadio Is ‘the Ideal Forum’ for Talking Hoops, Hometown Paper Says in Report on ‘NBA Breakdown’ Hosts

While we’re always pleased (if rarely surprised) to read profiles of our many hard-working, talented hosts in the local media, we were extra thrilled this morning to wake up and find our NBA Breakdown hosts Audley Stephenson and Dave Mendonca plastered across the front page of their hometown paper.

In a Brampton Guardian (which covers Brampton, Ontario, and suburban Toronto) story headlined “Hoops Junkies Host NBA Show,” reporter Frank Juzenas writes:

CAPTION: "That was the only time I've ever heard him speechless," Dave (above left) tells The Guardian of the time Audley (right) interviewed Vivica here on BlogTalkRadio.

"That was the only time I've ever heard him speechless," Dave (left) says of the time Audley (right) interviewed Vivica Fox.

“Like a lot of basketball fans, Dave Mendonca and Audley Stephenson love talking hoops, and they have found the ideal forum for it.

“For the past two years, the two Brampton men have been the hosts of NBA Breakdown.

“The list of past guests is impressive, including legends like Dominque Wilkins, Rick Barry, former NBA slam-dunk champion Spud Webb, Toronto Raptors head coach Jay Triano and the late Wayman Tisdale.

“Equally impressive is that their website has had visitors from more than 100 countries who love the banter between the two and their knowledge, with a lot of the feedback coming from the U.S.”

In Report on Host Kendall Barrow, ‘Getting Yourself on the Air Is Easier Said AND Done,’ Says Texas’ Beaumont Enterprise

If Kendall Barrow makes hosting his own BlogTalkRadio show look simple, that’s because, well, it is.

And his hometown paper couldn’t agree more.

In a feature this week headlined “Thanks to technological advances, a few plugs and buttons, getting yourself on the air is easier said and done every day,” the Beaumont Enterprise highlights the 21-year-old Texan’s experience hosting his twice-weekly show.

"It's a great way to get lot of people to tune in," Kendall (above) tells us of broadcasting on BlogTalkRadio.

Kendall Barrow, a broadcast journalism junior at Lamar [University], has just finished his last class and is going to produce his sports talk radio show. But Barrow isn’t heading to a studio at a radio station,” writes reporter Amos Morale.

“He’s simply heading to a quiet room somewhere on campus. He doesn’t need Continue reading

Shaquille O’Neal’s Mom: I Feel GOOD (Now that I’ve Stopped Drinking)

Lucille O’Neal learned the hard way that partying ’round the clock is a sure road to ruin.

Interviewed on Healthtopia Radio, Shaquille O’Neal‘s mother recalls her days as a lush, which began in 1992, after her son—who’d go on to win four NBA championships—was drafted by the Orlando Magic.

"I was so empty," Lucille (above) tells us of her inebriated years. "I had to cry out to the Lord."

"I was so empty," Lucille (above) tells us of her inebriated years. "I had to cry out to the Lord."

“I’d been drinking for years. At first I started social drinking. I’d drink during the week and I’d be ready to go to work on Monday morning after being drunk for the weekend,” Lucille, whose new memoir is titled Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go: From Mental Welfare to Mental Wealth, tells host Bonnie Michelle.

“But when my son went into the league and we were having a little bit of extra money, we were able to buy all the best alcohol—E&J, vodka, gin and juice, Courvoisier. It was such a variety out there.

“I could have done something else. But when you’re able to do and you have excessive money, you Continue reading

Penny Hardaway Back to Miami Heat—to Play with LeBron? Hell Yea! He Tells Us: ‘I’m still damn good at what I do’

Penny Hardaway wants to make one thing perfectly clear: He’s ready, willing and able to return to the NBA—and is jonesing to play side-by-side with LeBron James.

During his monthly “Penny for Your Thoughts” segment on The Bottom Line Sports Show, the all-star BlogTalkRadio contributor announced he’s throwing his hat in the ring for a place on the Miami Heat, where, in 2007, he played his final NBA season before retiring with knee injuries.

CAPTION: "I love basketball and I didn't get a chance to finish my career the way I wanted," Penny (above) said.

"I love basketball and I didn't get a chance to finish my career the way I wanted," Penny (above) said.

“Mentally I was retired and physically I was retired. I was playing recreational ball,” the shooting and point guard—who began his career with the Orlando Magic, before joining the Phoenix Suns and New York Kicks—told host Gerald Brown.

“But when the decision happened with Chris Bosh and LeBron, I felt like I could really be good in that system,” Penny added, referring to LeBron’s recent move from the Cleveland Cavs to the Heat.

Upon hearing LeBron’s Big Decision last week, Penny sent text messages to Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and former teammate Alonzo Mourning expressing his interest in competing for a Continue reading

Scott Patterson on George Steinbrenner: Yankees’ Farm Team Way Key to Bronx Bombers’ Success (Though Not for Me)

Though Scott Patterson never got to play in the House that Ruth Built, he still acknowledges the Powerhouse Franchise that The Boss Built.

Interviewed on Olivia Wilder Times, the Gilmore Girls star—who spent four years pitching for the N.Y. Yankees’ farm team in the ‘80s—recalls team owner George “The Boss” Steinbrenner, who passed away Tuesday at age 80.

CAPTION: "I didn't really get the shot that I felt I deserved," Scott (above) tells us of the Yankee's MLB club.

"I didn't really get the shot that I felt I deserved," Scott (above) tells us of not getting put in the Yanks' MLB lineup.

“I liked George and he liked me, and I didn’t really have a ghost of a chance of making that team because [Yankees coach] Billy [Martin] brought in so many pitchers from Oakland with him,” Scott tells host Olivia Wilder.

“George liked how I pitched, he put me in the program that they sell at Yankee Stadium, so I had something going on. We had a couple of talks.

“There was a lot of frustration in that organization and only when [George] stepped back a little bit and let the baseball people do their thing, like Gene Michael—who’s a baseball genius—did Continue reading

Rapper Fat Joe: LeBron James Not Comin’ to the Big Apple

Much as it pains him, Fat Joe says New Yorkers won’t be getting NBA superstar LeBron James any time soon.

Interviewed on H2GRadio, the rap star—who owns a street basketball team called the Terror Squad that plays in Harlem—weighs in on the chances of the New York Knicks snagging the Cleveland Cavaliers forward when his $60 million contract expires at the end the current NBA season, making him a free agent.

"I want somebody to be really, really disgusting in the paint," Fat Joe (above) tells us. "I want a rebounder and I want a dunker!"

“My opinion, as just a fan, I don’t think we getting’ LeBron,” the Get It Poppin’ singer tells host Edgar Burgos.

But in the same breath, he offers alternate picks.

“I would roll up [Phoenix Suns forward] Amare Stoudemire so bad! See, the Knicks ain’t had a guy dunk and break that rim in such a long time, man.

“Who was the best Knick pound for pound in recent teams? Allan Houston had the best gun, but he was like that clean-cut basic player.

We ain’t had nobody since Continue reading

BlogTalkRadio Fantasy Sports Channel Wins Two FSTA Awards

ftclogoDiehard Fantasy Sports fans already know that The Fantasy Sports Channel has more LIVE fantasy sports radio than anywhere on the planet — and now you can add “award winning” to that description.

The Fantasy Sports Channel won its first industry award this week, taking home the 2010 Best Podcasting Award at the Fantasy Sports Trade Association’s Winter Conference in Las Vegas. Scott Engel of RotoExperts.com, accepted the award on behalf of FSC.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, The Fantasy Sports Channel also won the Best New Site or Site Update Award from the FSTA on Tuesday for the launch of new site update at www.fsc.fm. All this, from a site that’s been on-air for about a year and a half. It speaks volumes about the great work contributed by all of FSC when FSC is nominated for the same awards as big contenders, such as ESPN.

Marc Ronick, managing editor and creator of the FSC, said, “FSC has been really well received and its an honor to have our industry recognize it this way. Thanks to everyone for helping to make the FSC such a success.” Ronick pointed out that FSC’s pride also lies with its affiliated shows, such as the Footballguys.com and RotoExperts.com, which nominations for FTSA awards this year inspire FSC to maintain its excellence and keep stepping up to the plate. So to speak.

The accolades keep pouring in for this site. We’ve always thought great things about FSC, and now we’ve got awards to back it up. Congratulations and nice work, FSC.
