SoundBits: Chenese Lewis Sports Ample Style and Grace Galore

EDITOR’S NOTE Aug. 25, 2010: To read about Chenese Lewis’ nude photo shoot with Whitney Thompson on behalf of Love Your Body Day, click here.

If Chenese Lewis isn’t already an inspiration to plus-sized women everywhere, she certainly should be. In 2003, the PLUS Model Radio host, who makes her home in Los Angeles, made history by being the first woman crowned Miss Plus America. Since then, she has created Love Your Body Day, an annual event that promotes self-acceptance and positive body images, which takes place in October in Hollywood. And if you missed Chenese in those roles, you may well have caught her on BET’s mock-dating show, Hell Date, or as an expert commentator on Dr. Phil. On that less-than-justice-doing introduction, we now give you the lovely lady herself.

Chenese:

Chenese: Oprah puts the "o" in her show's inspiration.

Give us a 15-second pitch for your show – why should listeners tune in?

PLUS Model Radio is geared toward women sizes 14 and up. The show title comes from my association with PLUS Model Magazine, where I’m on the editorial board. Neither the magazine nor the show, however, are limited to the topic of modeling. The average American woman wears a size 14 or above, yet plus-sized is still a niche market that’s fairly untapped. So my diverse audience has been growing steadily because there are few, if any, shows out there with the same focus. Guests on the show are successful plus-sized women, or someone whose product is geared towards that market. Notable guests have included Emme, Kimberly Locke, Mia Tyler and Whitney Thompson.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

Besides interviewing curvy celebs, I’m a budding one myself. I am pursing a career as an actress, television host and motivational speaker, with the occasional modeling gig on the side, along with other projects/events that I produce. I’ve actually had the opportunity to work with or meet several of the people that I’ve interviewed on the show!

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

Oprah Winfrey, hands down. Not only is she great at what she does, she’s a role model and philanthropist. I totally use her for inspiration when producing PLUS Model Radio. I try to have guests who cross all walks of life, ages and ethnicities. Many guests have inspirational stories of success, and about learning to love their bodies. I’ve also been able to use the show to help raise money for charity, and I try to keep the overall tone professional, positive, and uplifting.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

cg-033rr3Oprah! Other than her, I think all the other celebrities on my list are attainable. Sometimes I’m shocked myself with some of the guests I’ve been able to book. I’m in entertainment, so I have lots of friends in the industry who aren’t in the plus market. But they tell me they’re going to gain weight to be on my show. I take it as a compliment.

As we speak, what are you wearing?

I’m on the way to an industry event in Hollywood, so right now I have on a fabulous dress and heels. But when I host the show I’m real casual.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

Wow. I can’t think of anything really strange. Maybe being sick with a virus, on antibiotics and feeling horrible, but it being too late to cancel the scheduled show. As they say, the show must go on. So I tried to sound upbeat and into the interview. And thank goodness, it came out great! But as soon as that interview was over, I ran to the bathroom and, well, I’ll spare you the rest of the details. (lol)

SoundBits: Fantasy Football Guru (and Dali Lama Fan) Louis Tranquilli

Though we devised the six questions that appear here each week in the name of offering you a peek into the lives and on-air offerings of BTR’s most dedicated hosts, even we never dreamed we’d be talking personal finance, Eastern theology and Mickey Mouse in the same column. But that’s precisely what happened in the case of Louis Tranquilli. As host of BFDFANTASYfootball.com on our Fantasy Sports Channel, the Clinton, N.J., resident regularly serves up winning fantasy football insights. As for his non-sports-related musings, proceed at your own risk.

Give us a 15-second pitch for your show – why should listeners tune in?

Because I’ve worked with professional football players, been to the NFL scouting combine and talked football with coaches, all of which has afforded me more than just a “fan’s view” of the game. Moreover, it makes me a fantasy football expert.

Louis: (Re)dressed for success.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve been on fire twice, and almost been blown up once. If that doesn’t surprise them, I also – as a financial advisor with The Investment Center – I manage many millions dollars of my clients’ money.

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

Baseball Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner. During the ’70s, Ralph used to pour a can of beer and have it sitting right in front of him the entire time he was doing his Kiner’s Corner show on WOR-TV in New York, which aired before and after Mets’ games. He wasn’t a great broadcaster, but he was a great guy to listen talk baseball. Ralph, who’s now 86 and, between 1946 and 1955, played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, was John Madden before there was a Madden. Way underrated, he was relaxed, enjoyed the game and said some really off-the-wall stuff. Lotta fun.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

I’d want a person of great controversy. Someone who’s at once adored and despised for his strong beliefs. I appreciate people who are willing to think differently and create a stir with their ability to deliver a message that isn’t pleasant, though is politically correct. Someone willing to place himself in harm’s way for others, and forsake personal glory for doing it. So that eliminates athletes, politicians, business people and scientists – leaving me with the Dali Lama or the Pope. Each has a name, but has given it up for the perpetuating “theory” of their religion. They represent something that’s based soley on belief, so there’s no science that can persude them. So it would be a gas trying to get some football opinions out of these guys.

As we speak, what are you wearing?

I’m still in my pajamas, just back from a Disney World vacation. (That little rat disguised as a mouse stole all my damn clothes, man!)

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

I cleaned up puke from one of my four kids while on the air. Top that.

SoundBits: Amy McCracken’s Got a Monstrous Fang Base

With the enormous popularity of Twilight on the big screen and True Blood on the little, vampires are no doubt the new black. So it should come as no surprise that Vamp Radio host Amy McCracken and her crack team of staffers have been burning the candle at both ends to bring their voracious listeners news, gossip, interviews and other goodies from those blood-sucking series. In recent weeks, for instance, the show has welcomed Twilight castmembers Daniel Cudmore, who plays Felix, and Justine Wachsberger, who plays Gianna in the upcoming sequel, New Moon. They’ve also dished with actors from the 1987 Joel Schumacher-directed vamp flick The Lost Boys, including Brook McCarter, Chance Corbitt and Billy Werth. On that note, we now take you live to deceptively bucolic Connelly Springs, N.C., where Amy resides – amid forces we mere mortals can never fully comprehend.

CAPTION: Amy: Bloody good show!

Amy: Bloody good show!

Give us a 15-second pitch for your show – why should listeners tune in?

Our show is fan-driven and down to earth, with a fun and relaxed, yet professional, vibe. We cover a variety of Vampire-related and paranormal-themed shows. We also have a great night for authors of your favorite novels. And don’t forget about our band night, when you can hear from your favorite artist, or new upcoming bands. Plus, we’re live, so you never know who’ll call in. Believe us, you never want to miss a night of Vamp Radio.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

1) I hate talking on the phone. 2) ’80s vampire movies scare the life out of me. (I can’t watch Lost Boys alone, and I’ll never watch Fright Night again.)

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

Shaun Daily, host of TV Talk right here on BlogTalkRadio. OK, I have more than one! Ace & TJ from Kiss 95.1, Charlotte, N.C.’s No. 1 morning show. These two men have done so much good for families in the Charlotte broadcasting area.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Alex O’Loughlin! Why? Because he was the main character on the CBS’s show Moonlight. Moonlight started Moonlight Radio, which led to Vamp Radio.

As we speak, what are you wearing?

Jeans and a T-shirt. But I host my show in my Vamp Radio pajamas. We will have those for sale in about a week. (Just kidding.)

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

Back in January, I had Corey Haim on and in the middle of the interview I asked him to marry me. I got a rain check – then a yes.

On a side note, I would like to thank my Vamp Radio team. Without the hard work of Jess, Ashley, Gina, Angela, AngM, Sheila and our newest member, Courtney, Vamp Radio wouldn’t be on the air in all its gothic glory.
