Becoming Fran

She’s well known as the nasal-voiced star of hit 90’s sitcom, The Nanny.fl_fran-story

But Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actress, screenwriter, producer, and comedian Fran Drescher has been putting her star power to work to help others ever since then.

In 2000, after two years of symptoms and eight misdiagnoses, Fran entered the hospital for what was determined to be uterine cancer.  The disease had progressed so far that Fran underwent a radical hysterectomy.  She wrote about her experience in her book, Cancer Shmancer.

Seven years after her surgery, Drescher announced the launch of the Cancer Schmancer Movement, a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all women’s cancers be diagnosed while in Stage 1, the stage when cancer is most curable.  Since then she has worked tirelessly as a healthcare advocate, raising gynecologic cancer awareness in Washington, and has received several awards for her efforts.
