Storytellers Presents Alt Rock Demigod Black Francis AKA Frank Black

Black Francis AKA Frank BlackThis week on Storytellers, we had the honor of interviewing Black Francis AKA Frank Black of the landmark group The Pixies. He opened up about his creative process, raising 5 kids, the old days with the Pixies, and a lot more!

Name someone who has had more influence over the flow of modern rock — where noise and rhythm meet mystery and beauty — over the last 25 years than Charles Thomson, aka Black Francis, aka Frank Black.

Black Francis is the stage name adopted by Thompson during his years of global domination with the Pixies, from the group’s ’86 formation in Boston until 1993 when the winds of change blew. (And oh, was there joy in Mudville when the Pixies reunited and toured anew beginning in 2004!)

Thompson’s next nom de rock was as Frank Black, often in the bandleading context of Frank Black and the Catholics. Thompson released many a wondrous album under his Frank Black moniker, demonstrating an ear for skewed but perfect rock songsmanship.

He returned to the Black Francis name for ’07’s rocking Bluefinger, a concept album about the life and death of Dutch painter/rocker Herman Brood.

Still working under as Black Francis, he released the sexually charged NonStopErotik in 2010. Abbabubba, a B-sides and demos collection, arrived in 2011, along with The Golem, Francis’ score for the 1920 silent film of the same name. Black Francis will now be hitting the road this very week with Reid Paley.

Join hosts Eric Olsen & me for a candid interview with Black Francis.

Latest Storytellers Interview: Tom Kenny, SpongeBob Squarepants & So Much More

On the latest installment of our series Storytellers, Tom Kenny dropped by to chat, and we found out there is so much more to the actor, comedian, voice actor, singer/songwriter than just SpongeBob SquarePants, but man, that’s a lot.

Ridiculously prolific, Kenny has voiced major characters for, to name but a few, Brickleberry, Mad, Ultimate Spider-Man, Adventure Time, Winnie the Pooh, Futurama, Transformers; and is announcer for Kids’ Choice Awards and MC for Lucha VaVoom.  And that’s not all! You may also remember Tom from his work on the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show, for which he was a writer and cast member.

Since 1999 Tom has been the voice of Nickelodeon’s cartoon sensation, which was recently named “the most loved TV series in America” by USA Today.  Tune in to hear how Tom developed the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants.

Now, the show has spawned a holiday album, It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! Album, just released by Nickelodeon Records.  Tom sings and co-wrote ten of the album’s 12 songs with producer Andy Paley (above left) (Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys, Ramones, Madonna), with whom he also co-wrote and recorded the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Best Day Ever album in ’06.

The release coincides with the new stop-motion animated TV special It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! (inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials) that premiered on CBS on Nov 23 and will run on Nickolodeon Dec 6 at 7:30pEP.

Join Storytellers hosts, Eric Olsen and Chitra Agrawal and listen to an interview with the hilarious and talented Tom Kenny.

Who better to talk with the day after the election?

Treading where the likes of Will Rogers, Mort Sahl, and Dick Gregory have trod before him, Will Durst has become one of the premier political satirists of our time, assembling a hilarious patchwork of outraged and outrageous common sense via columns, books, radio and television commentaries; and most especially, stand up comedy.

His abiding motto is “You can’t make stuff up like this.” The former radio talk host, oyster shucker, and margarine smuggler currently writes a nationally syndicated humor column, Durst Case Scenario and tweets @WillDurst

The SF-based Durst is a 5 time Emmy nominee, has been fired by PBS three times; stold jokes in 14 countries; and has racked up 7 nominations for Stand-Up of the Year.  His latest e-book is Elect to Laugh! A Hilarious, Common Sense Guide to American Politics.

BlogTalkRadio Celebrates Halloween with The Fright Night Awards & Shadoe Stevens

On the 2nd episode of our new series, Storytellers, BlogTalkRadio teamed up with America’s Most Haunted for a special Halloween broadcast. Host Eric Olsen talks Fright Night Awards with the hot and saucy Carrie Keagan of VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live and Mike Burg, creator/producer of the Teen Choice and Kids’ Choice Awards and owner of Edge Health and Edge Marketing and Entertainment.

The Fright Night Awards celebrates actors and actresses in the vampire and supernatural genre of film.  The big event is the brainchild of Mike Burg, a blood cancer survivor and Cancer Bites, a new blood cancer awareness and education initiative, with winners announced by Carrie Keagan on VH1.

Also, the mythic radio (KROQ, American Top 40) and TV personality (Craig Ferguson) Shadoe Stevens joins the show to chat about his weekly paranormal Mental Radio show.  As the first PD of LA’s KROQ-FM, Stevens created one of the first Alternative Rock formats in the country, and as radio personality there, he won the Billboard Magazine Personality of the Year Award. In 1988, he followed Casey Kasem as host of American Top Forty for the next six years, broadcast in 120 countries to an estimated 1 billion listeners every week.  He was a regular on the popular Hollywood Squares TV program and is currently announcer for The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
