When we think of Fred Willard, many terms come to mind.
“Jovial,” “jocular,” “jolly” – just to name the “J’s.”
Or, to use most every other letter in the alphabet, “amusing,” “child-like,” “comical,” “drole,” “gifted,” “gut-busting,” “hilarious,” “innocent,” “riotious,” “rollicking,” “sweet,” “sublime,” “side-splitting,” “uproarious” and “perpetually underrated.”
But one term that has never popped into our head is “horror fan.”
So we were tickled pink to learn that the legendary character actor – and veteran of such classic comedies as This is Spinal Tap, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind – enjoys good old-fashioned slasher flicks.
“I was at this party for Pixar [Animation Studios] the other night with [Curb Your Enthusiasm star] Jeff Garlin, he and his wife – we were having dinner – I started telling him that I love to go by myself to this one theater to see these horror films,” Fred tells Movie Addict Headquarters host Betty Jo Tucker.
“I told him I went to see Friday the 13th and he just found that so amusing – that I would go by myself and sit in this big empty theater on a weeknight and watch Friday the 13th.
“So I just started describing the movie, and I said, ‘You won’t believe, Jason shot a bow-and-arrow that went across’ – you know, I was putting him on by this time. But I had never seen him laugh so hard.
“A lot of times I’ll say something that people think I’m serious and they’ll laugh at me.”
Fred can be seen live and in person next month as he takes on guest-host duties at Robert Osborne’s Fifth Annual Classic Film Festival in Athens, Georgia.
