ABC News Features BlogTalkRadio – Thanks Dad

For those of you that have followed BlogTalkRadio, the story of how I came up with the idea was told.

When I was growing up in Seaford, Long Island my dad was in the dry cleaning business. He and my uncle owned a few dry cleaning stores located in Manhattan. The store my dad spent most of his time (and life) at was just adjacent to Lincoln Center on W. 64th in Manhattan.

During my adolescent years, I used to take the train from our house in long island to help my dad out in his store. I would sweep up, tag and bag clothes and my favorite job…..delivering the dry cleaning. In those days, getting a dollar or two dollar tip from the wealthy NYC customers was big stuff, especially for a 14 year old kid in the 70’s.

ABC TV studios was located adjacent to the apartment building where my dad’s store was located. Some of his customers were Sam Donaldson, Geraldo Rivera, Barbara Walters and many other ABC personalities. If I was lucky enough I used to deliver dry cleaning to some of these TV personalities. It was exciting stuff!!

Yesterday, with great help from Marisol at Middleberg Communications, our excellent PR agency, we were able to secure a TV spot on ABC News Now called Money Matters for BlogTalkRadio (video below):

Host and BlogTalkRadio fitness director Peter K joined me on the 5 minute piece. I was pleased with how the clip came out and as a follower of BlogTalkRadio, you will notice that the anchor on the broadcast sounds just like the British lady which proceeds every one of our broadcasts.

AlanCleaners So here I was standing outside my father’s dry cleaning store just having been broadcast on a major TV network, the network where I used to deliver dry cleaning. This is the first time I had seen my dad’s store in perhaps 20 years. Of course, I had to pop my head into the store and tell the non English speaking Korean owners that 30 years ago my dad owned this store. They had no clue what I was talking about, but they did smile a lot.

Peter took this picture of me in front of Lincoln Plaza Valet. I felt my dad everywhere yesterday afternoon. As I looked around the store, as I walked into the ABC building and as I sat in front of the camera answering the question…”What inspired you to create BlogTalkRadio?”

Thanks Dad.

BlogTalkRadio: Show the World What You Can Do

By now, most of you have probably seen the videos of the English mobile phone salesmen, Paul Potts, who belts out opera with unforeseen and stirring results.

Potts went on to win “Britain’s Got Talent” for his remarkable, surprising and inspirational talent.paulpotts Deservedly so.

Peter K, our fitness director, forwarded these movies to us. The first movie showcases the surprise of his first appearance. The second showcases his continued success. Alan and I started talking about Potts and the similarities between this show and our network are apparent.

In the second video, perpetually critical Piers Morgan described the show “Britain’s Got Talent:”

“…we both just had this sort of vision of finding somebody who was doing an ordinary job, very unassuming, quietly had an amazing talent and we could provide them with a platform to just show the world what they could do.”

And that’s what Alan did when he built BlogTalkRadio. The platform exists for people to get out there and show the world what they can do. We already have success stories. What is yours?

Eat Like a Marathon Champion- from Blogtalkradio's Fitness Director, Peter K

Peter K and Serafina Restaurant Group show YOU how to eat like a marathon champion with their MARATHON WEEK MENU.

5 mtfWant the energy of a marathoner whether you are running the race or not? Who doesn’t want more energy in this time of multitasking and trying to be and do everything at once? The great news is we can all get more energy very quickly and easily. HOW?

I recently designed a Marathon menu with Serafina Restaurant Group in NYC and wanted to share some great energy tips with you. Listen to the The Peter K Show to hear all about how to get more energy, strength and endurance.

Let’s start with where energy comes from. Keeping it simple, energy comes from what we eat and drink. PERIOD. Forget claims from questionable sources that energy comes from “magic pills”. The nutrients from the foods we eat and what we drink provide us with the energy to fuel our daily lives – and right on through a marathon!
Here is a list of the foods you should include in your diet for sustained energy and overall HEALTH:

COMPLEX CARBS:

  • Whole wheat breads, pasta and other whole grain products (oats, rye, etc)
  • Brown rice
  • Sweet and white potatoes
  • Starchy vegetables (legumes and root vegetables)

WHOLE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES:

  • Green leafy (lettuces, spinach, kale)
  • Brightly colored veggies (red/yellow/green peppers, tomatoes)
  • Fiber rich fruits of all colors (apples, oranges, pineapple)

Here’s a sample of an energizing menu:

Breakfast: Oatmeal or whole grain cereal with skim milk or soy milk and fresh fruit. Another option would be a whole grain bagel or English muffin with all natural fruit preserves

5 mtfLunch: Serafina whole wheat pasta with organic vegetables. Whole wheat is a healthier pasta choice with more fiber that will help slow the release of sugar to your bloodstream. With choice of:
Grilled organic chicken breast paillard, served w lentils, spinach and sweet potatoes or steamed vegetable platter

Dinner: Serafina whole wheat pasta with organic vegetables. Grilled Filet mignon (4 oz.) served w extra virgin olive oil mashed sweet potatoes

For a snack and before training choose an apple, banana or kiwi
