SoundBits: Semi-Roving (and Fantasy Sports-Loving) Media Maven Steve Krakauer

The list of guests who’ve graced MediaBistro.com’s Morning Media Menu in 2009 alone reads like a who’s who of big-media talent. To wit: Cynthia McFadden and Terry Moran of ABC News, Chris Cuomo of ABC’s Good Morning America, Chris Hansen of NBC News, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC, John Roberts and Kiran Chetry of CNN, Becky Quick of CNBC, Liz Claman of Fox Business Network, and former CNN anchor Tucker Carlson. So it’s no wonder that we’ve dragged Steve Krakauer into our green room this week for a grilling. Along with Glynnis MacNicol of MediaBistro’s FishbowlNY.com, the New Jersey native, who now resides in Manhattan, takes to cyberspace each weekday at 9 a.m. ET as host of what’s fast shaping up to be the media industry’s premier radio program. That said, we’re on in three… two…

Lean and mean: One-man reporting team Steve (above) covering Barack Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last summer.

Lean and mean: One-man reporting team Steve (above) covering Barack Obama’s speech at the DNC in Denver last summer.

Give us a 15- second pitch for your show – why should listeners tune in?

We tell you the media news of the day in 15 minutes or less, and bring on special guests from around the industry.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

One would have to be that I’m a big fantasy baseball and football fan – and I’m lucky to have the wide array of shows on BlogTalkRadio’s Fantasy Sports Channel. Also, I spent a year as an NBC page (like “Kenneth the Page” [played by Jack McBrayer] on 30 Rock), roaming the halls of 30 Rock while working on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and giving hundreds of studio tours.

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

I’m not sure who my broadcasting hero would be, but certainly one of the radio titans would be Rush Limbaugh, who we were pleasantly surprised to learn listens to the show (or at least someone on his staff does).

[Editor’s Note: To read about Rush’s Morning Media Menu mentions – and hear those excerpts from his show – click here.]

CAPTION: And getting the lowdown from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski at the TVNewser Summit in NYC this month.

And getting the lowdown from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski at the TVNewser Summit in NYC this month.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Of course we’d love Rush to come on. And ever since former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich started showing up on every channel, we’ve wanted to have him as a guest as well. Blago – if you’re reading – you’re welcome any time!

As we speak, what are you wearing?

Jeans and a T-shirt…boring. As I usually broadcast from my apartment before heading to work, I’m usually on my way to becoming fully dress- ed for our 9 a.m. podcast.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

There’s been a couple times where we’ve taken the podcast on the road for a “roving podcast.” We’ve broadcast from MSNBC’s Morning Joe green room and from an office at CNN’s American Morning, while inter- viewing the hosts of each show. It was a little strange wandering around those studios talking to various TV news personalities on speaker on my iPhone.

Rush Limbaugh’s a No-Longer-So-Secret BlogTalkRadio Listener

If you weren’t already convinced that online radio – in addition to being the wave of the future – is a force to be reckoned with, take a gander at these quotes from Rush Limbaugh’s February 20 terrestrial radio show:

Terry: Twittered touché to talk titan.

Terry: Twittered touché to talk titan.

“There’s a blog out there called mediabistro.com, TVNewser and so forth. And the TV people read it relig- iously. I mean, not too many other members of the public do, but it’s big in the TV business,” said the talk- meister.

“They have a show on there; it’s a Web radio show.

Terry Moran of ABC’s Nightline was the guest [this morning]. This is what he said about President Obama,” the nationally- syndicated host continued.

The “Web radio” show Rush was referring to is, as you may have guessed, BlogTalkRadio’s Morning Media Menu, which airs weekdays at 9 a.m. ET.

Hosted by Steve Krakauer and Glynnis MacNicol, MMM delivers one- on-one interviews with leading media-industry figures.

On the campaign trail in November 2007 “Lord Obama.”

On the 2007 campaign trail with “Lord Obama.”

This year alone, the show has featured such guests as ABC News anchor Cynthia McFadden, CBS Morning Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez, former CNN host Tucker Carlson, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez, CNBC anchor Becky Quick and Fox News Channel host Andy Levy.

Not to mention Terry, who – eliciting Rush’s response – said on MMM:

“In some ways Barack Obama is the first president since George Washington to be taking a step down into the Oval Office. “From visionary leader of a giant movement, now he’s got an executive position that he has to perform in, in a way, and I think the coverage reflects that.”

Rush: Regular BTR tuner-inner?

Rush: Regular BTR tuner-inner?

“Yes, you heard right: a step down for Lord Barack Obama, the Most Merciful,” Rush added about Terry’s take on America’s new commander-in-chief.

“He was leading this giant movement, à la George Washington. Now he’s had to take a step down. What did I tell you people? He’s too big to fail.”

Only problem is, Terry wasn’t serious.

“Rush didn’t get the joke, the ABC News anchor quipped via Twitter.

“Or the point. As usual.”

‘They Can’t Stop Reliving It,’ Says ‘CBS Early Show’ Anchor of US Air Passengers’ Crash-Landing

It has since been dubbed the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

“It was such a warm feeling to have them all in the same room,” Maggie (above) tells us of the passenger reunion.

“It was such a warm feeling having them all in the same room,” Maggie (above) tells us of the passenger reunion.

But at the moment of impact into the Hudson River on January 15, those aboard US Airways Flight 1549 surely thought they were gonners.

Happily, all 151 passengers on the ill-fated plane sur- vived the forced crash-landing, soon after it took off from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport. Thanks of course to the steady hand of captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who fast became a Charles Lindbergh-like figure for the 21st century.

On Monday, Feb. 9, the CBS Early Show will feature a live reunion with Sully and his passengers.

And this week on BlogTalkRadio’s Morning Media Menu, Early Show anchor Maggie Rodriguez talks with hosts Steve Krakauer and Glynnis MacNicol about taping a segment for the emotional reunion.

“We all got together at a hotel . . . And it was the first time that they’d seen each other since that day. And there was just this instant bond – they’re like a family,” says Maggie.

“They couldn’t stop talking and reliving everything and getting to know each other. So if they’re like a family, Sully is like the dad.”

Maggie also dis- cusses the forth- coming reunion with “dad” and his biological kin.

“I can’t wait to see this family all together in the same room for the first time since the crash,” she says.

“We’re going to have Sully, we’re going to have the crew, we’re going to have Sully’s family and we’re going to have people who were on the plane.”
