If Elliott Gould speaks glowingly of Barbra Streisand, it’s because he still has the utmost respect and affection for her.

Interviewed this spring on Positive Living, the screen legend reminisced about the iconic diva, to whom he was married from 1963 to 1971— and with whom he had one child, Jason Gould, now 43.

“Barbra and I started out together; we married; and we have a wonderful, loving and gifted son,” the actor—who originated the role of Trapper John in Robert Altman‘s M*A*S*H and earned an Oscar nomination for his work in Paul Mazursky‘s Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice—told host Patricia Raskin.

“We’re family and we’re as friendly as we can be. [Jason] has acted, but he’s not acting now. He’s developing creative situations with and for his mother, and also for himself.”

Moments later, Elliott delved into the corners of his mind for even more misty water-colored memories.

“Barbra and I… starting out together… falling in love… living together… marrying… Barbra’s career is going through the roof… and, of course, nobody sings like Barbra…” he said.

“We were very young and had, you know, limitations.

“And divorce is a very painful and difficult thing. And that’s also a process.

“But the time that we were together, and also the overview of what we are to one another in relation to our son, is something that is priceless and, as far as I’m concerned, eternal.”
