Judging from its title, you’d think that Laura Theodore’s show—The Jazzy Vegetarian—had something to do with food and music. And indeed it does. Each week, our host serves up scrumptious yet nutritious recipes while interviewing not only vegetarian chefs but like-minded musical figures. Like multi-platinum-selling singer-pianist Michael Feinstein, Lauren Kinhan of the Grammy-winning group New York Voices, and Flutist of the Year nominee Ali Ryerson. And as testament to the popularity of her show, which debuted in November 2009, a TV version was picked up last year by WYBE in Philadelphia, one of America’s largest independent public broadcasting stations. What’s the No. 1 reason why you host a BlogTalkRadio show?

To help others to live more healthy and compassionate lives.

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

(1) As a child, I ate a lot of meat. Then, in my early 20s, I wanted to start eating healthier, so I looked into the vegetarian lifestyle. After questioning where the meat was coming from, I realized that being a vegetarian was the right choice for me. It happened step by step. (2) Even though I’m now a vegan, I still have to work hard at trying to be fit, just like everyone else. That’s why I’m continually developing easy, healthy recipes to share with my listeners. (I usually create at least two new Jazzy Vegetarian recipes per week!)

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Hmm… let me think about this. I guess it would be the current, or a former, president of the United States. I’d like to ask his view on how to make more healthy foods (particularly lower fat, vegetarian ones) available in all schools across the nation. Seems like a good way to get Americans eating healthy while they’re young!

As we speak, what are you wearing?

My track suit. My oh-so-comfy uniform of choice when I’m in my office.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

One time, my show started and there was nothing but silence where the musical intro was supposed to be. I freaked out and hung up the line, then redialed in, thinking the show had been disconnected. Of course, it had been my error! Turns out that when I’d initially scheduled that show, I’d forgotten to program my opening jingle. Now I double check each week and make sure to have the jingle visible on my switchboard, just in case it ever happens again. Boy, was my face red!
