Laron: Cue the Pepto-Bismol

Welcome to SoundBits, a new weekly feature – appearing every Tuesday – on the BlogTalkRadio blog that exposes a side of our hosts you rarely get to see. Today we turn the mic on for Laron Cue of Los Angeles, host of the popular Cyber Mix Tape Show.

Give us a 15-second pitch for your BlogTalkRadio show – why should listeners tune in?

We strive to be one of the coolest podcasts by constantly pushing the envelope with our music selections and entertainment pro- gramming. And in the coming weeks, we plan to continue bringing listeners more in- depth reporting on a wider range of topics.  Our recent voter-education series, “Wise Choices,” for example, proved to be very popular. So we have similar series in the works dealing with health and fitness, environmental issues and non-profit events, all topped with celebrity interviews and healthy dose of new music for the cool kids!

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you?

Listeners are often surprised to find out that the calls I receive are not staged!  And even when I have questions for my guests, their answers at times leave me speechless, like [hip-hop artist] Emmanuel Jal‘s emotional response on his feelings of reconnecting with his long lost father.

Another thing is that, no matter how many times I do a show, I still get a little nervous the first few minutes into it. And if I have a guest, my stomach is usually more active than usual.

Who’s your broadcasting hero?

My tastes range from guys like Star and Buc Wild and Howard Stern clear to Charlie Rose, Michael Basden, Garth Trinidad, Tavis Smiley and other NPR regulars. I try to blend them all and bring my own style to the table.  I also get inspiration from past and present DJs like Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito, Funkmaster Flex (a la the bomb effects that I use), DJ Red Alert (whose ‘yeeaaahh’ I blatantly bite all throughout my shows out of respect for him!), and my father, who was a radio DJ for years when I was a kid.

If you could book any person on earth as a guest on your show, who would it be and why?

Hmmm… Can I give you my top five?

Oprah: Because she’s, well, Oprah!

Russell Simmons: I actually met him once, so would love to interview him on my show.

Barack Obama: That would be a career highlight, to say the least.

Quentin Tarantino: I met him once as well. He’s as animated as he is talented and would be a great guest on the show. (Hint. hint.)

Maya Angelou: It would be an honor to speak with her and hear her voice on my show.

As we speak, what are you wearing?

Nothing fancy. A pair of jeans and a Converse T-shirt; some old Nike Cortez. (BTW: What’s up with all the skulls and bones on all the clothes these days?)

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done while in the middle of hosting your show?

Nothing too crazy. Most of the strange things happen on the show. But I have done dishes and taken out the trash while interviewing people! (lol.)

I remember one show, I taking out the garbage and bumped into the neighbors while I had guests on the phone debating one of the California propositions. I had to ignore my neighbor’s hello as I rattled off a quick question to keep the show guest talking!  I later apologized to my neighbor for being rude. Then there are the times when my laptop crashes, forcing me to reconnet with the desktop computer and stall for minutes on end.
