‘Night Views Radio’ Host Robert Saul: Depression Never Sounded So Funny

If ever there were a BlogTalkRadio show on which anything goes, Night Views is it. Like what, you ask? Like an interview with Donna Simpson, the 42-year-old mom who spends $750 a week on food and wears (no joke) size XXXXXXXL dresses—during which she said, “I’d like to be fatter.” Or how about Jim Florentine? Soon after dropping in to chat, the funnyman set the record straight on his breakup with Howard Stern’s sidekick Robin Quivers. “We’re two adults,” he said. “We’re not in high school going, ‘I’m never talking to you again!’ ‘Well, f— you. I’m not either!'” Better yet, Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett. Among the projects he showed up to plug was the Disney feature Tangled, in which he plays Hook Hand Thug opposite Mandy Moore’s Rapunzel. The only problem was, he described the flick as being about “this hot chick that lives in a castle, but oddly enough it’s her pubic hair that she lets out the window.” So it’s no wonder we’re psyched to have as this week’s SoundBits subject, the puppet-master behind such interviews, Robert Saul. The self-described stay-at-home dad, who makes his home in Mays Landing, N.J., joins us live in three, two…

Tell us two things listeners would be surprised to learn about you.

(1) I used to suffer from severe depression. I was actually in the hospital along with my future mother-in-law, being treated for the condition. That’s how I met my wife; when she came to visit her mother. (2) Before launching Night Views, my co-host, Travis Wettstein (who’s also my cousin) and I had been talking about doing a radio show together as far back as the sixth grade.

Jim Florentine on Ex-Gal Pal Robin Quivers: ‘It’s All Good’

Despite his many accomplishments since splitting with Robin Quivers in 2007—including the launch of VH1’s That Metal Show and the shooting of the feature flick A Little Help with Jenna FischerJim Florentine‘s failed romance with Howard Stern‘s sidekick is still top of mind with most all his fans.

Interviewed on Night Views Radio, the Crank Yankers comic discusses his fling with Robin, which began in August 2007, when—while live on Howard’s show—he asked her on a date.

"She's awesome," Jim (above with Robin) tells us of hooking up with Howard's "conscience." "She was amazing."

“All of the emails I’ve gotten since I booked you on the show,” asks host Robert Saul, “it’s all about your relationship with Robin. Can you fill us in? Everybody is curious as to why you two ended the relationship.”

“I don’t know. That was three years ago. it just didn’t work out. You know—who knows?” says Jim.

“We’re still friends, we’re still on good terms. We still keep in contact.

“Look, we’re two adults. We’re not Continue reading

Brad Garrett on an ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Reunion: ‘That will never happen’

As with every long-running sitcom that has wrapped, there’s always a chance that those involved in creating the magic will be enticed to reunite.

So when Brad Garrett dropped in on Night Views Radio, host Robert Saul was quick to ask about an Everybody Loves Raymond reunion.

And without missing a beat, Brad—who played Robert Barone on the CBS series that signed off in 2005— replied:

“No, that will never happen. Ray [Romano] isn’t the type who would ever do that. Like Jerry Seinfeld, Ray knew when to go out.

“To this day, nobody made the money on TV that Ray did, on the last two years of the show… The money he turned down just to do a year 10 was unfathomable.

“But what’s great about Ray is, it’s all about the craft. And he knew we were out of stories and he really wanted to go out on top. We knew there’d never be a reunion. But with the passing of Peter [Boyle], there would never, ever… Out of respect, out of the love we have for Peter— you know, he was such a huge part of that show. And to try Continue reading

“On June 28, I’m opening up my own comedy club. In Las Vegas —at the Tropicana,” the funnyman told host Michael Nayt at Annie Duke Celebrity Poker Night last week at the Commerce Casino in Las Vegas, which benefited After-School All-Stars.

“I’m very very excited. ‘I’ve always wanted a club,” he added.

“We’re going back to old Vegas —like the Cocoa Room—and it’s very very cool.”
